Peer Mentorship Program SU(5)

SU(5) is a peer mentorship program for first year graduate students in physics and astronomy. For many students, especially underrepresented students, the transition from undergraduate to graduate school can be difficult, as students balance TA responsibilities, classes, and research. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and recent discussions about racism, inclusion, and diversity, we anticipate incoming graduate students will face additional challenges in the transition to graduate school.

Our goal is to make this transition easier.

  • SU(5) is organized by and for graduate students. Our founders and current leadership team are:
  • Cady van Assendelft, Stanford
  • George Iskander, UChicago
  • Ridge Liu, Yale
  • John Martyn, MIT
  • Nick Rolston, Stanford
  • Bárbara Cruvinel Santiago, Columbia

We provide a space for students to share difficulties, successes, hopes, and worries about graduate school. Students meet for about an hour once every two weeks, online in groups of four. SU(5) is open to students in Ph.D., Master’s, and post-baccalaureate programs.

We’re committed to making SU(5) a helpful, inclusive, and positive experience for every participant.
